Qualities Of A Christian Woman
I have long loved Paul’s teachings in Titus chapter 2.
2 But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine: 2 that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience; 3 the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things— 4 that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, Titus 2:1-4 NKJV
Paul lists first that both men and women should be reverent to God, sound in faith, love, and not slanderers.
So much of this chapter is for older women teaching younger women that it is sometimes referred to as the TITUS TWO WOMAN chapter.
We learn that our hearts, minds, and souls should be dedicated first and foremost to God. As such, we will be women who serve and love God and others.
Our behavior should follow our beliefs.
Our speech should be used to teach others about God and His values, not in idle or harmful chatter, hurting others.
They are then given a caution about wine use and told to be teachers of good things.
Paul goes on to tell these older women exactly what they are to teach the younger women. They are to be Christians who love God totally. They are told to love their husbands and children.
Does this seem obvious? No, sadly, it is not obvious.
Then, as now, many women overly love themselves, their appearance, their education, career, fame, income, knowledge, and beauty quest more than anything else.
Am I being too hard? I think not.
Think of the number of young women who have turned to abortion. They want their own time agenda instead of the blessing of a new human life from God.
I actually knew a young woman who was considering an abortion because her wedding dress would not fit as she hoped, while carrying her child.
What is wrong with the women of today who break God’s laws and then add murder to the list of sins committed? May God forgive them.
God has given us children to love and to teach them of Him.
Nurturing them is our job. Raising our children is not the job of the babysitter, neighbor, childcare facility, or school.
It is OUR PRIVILEGE AND OUR JOB.
Furthermore, Paul continues with qualities women should possess:
5 to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed. Titus 2:5 NKJV
How many of the women of today do you know who are quiet and discreet, pure and chaste, and enjoy being homemakers?
The art of making a HOME is a blessing.
We don’t need to dress up the title and call ourselves domestic engineers.
We are Christian women who are MAKING A HOME for our husbands, from day one of our marriage, and for our children as they come.
While this chapter is incredibly valuable for women, it is essential to recognize that God provides instruction, through Paul, for men as well.
Now It’s Your Turn, Men
Paul finishes this chapter, telling young men to be a pattern of good works and to be honest as they serve.
6 Likewise, exhort the young men to be sober-minded, 7 in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility, 8 sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you. Titus 2:6-8 NKJV
Live doing good works, being serious, sober, honest, reverent, not sinning in deed or speech. Work, no matter your situation, serving well without angry retorts nor stealing from your employer. Be honorable. Live the doctrine of our God.
9 Exhort bondservants to be obedient to their own masters, to be well pleasing in all things, not answering back, 10 not pilfering, but showing all good fidelity, that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things. Titus 2:9-10 NKJV
God’s Grace
Paul then gives this excellent advice, telling us that it is the grace of God that brings salvation. We are to turn from ungodliness and lusts and live righteously and godly.
Live godly in all things, as we look for Jesus appearing.
11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.
15 Speak these things, exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise you. Titus 2:11-15 NKJV
Did you catch that? Paul closes this chapter by telling us to look for the blessed hope of waiting for the appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus.
Until He comes, and He will, we are to follow these things, waiting and serving God and each other, especially your husbands and children, ladies.
It is a blessed job from God Himself, especially to you women.
Lastly, for us all, we are to live godly lives and look for Jesus to come. When He appears, all will be glorious beyond our imagining as believers.
Til then, remember that Christ gave Himself for us and has redeemed us from sin and purified us for Himself.
