The Dream

A long time ago, while she was still living, I had a dream about Mother Teresa.

Why would a nice Protestant woman dream about Mother Teresa, I wondered as I woke.

I believe now that God wanted to share with me, a universal truth.

I share it now with you all.

The Dream

“And the Lord said unto him,

What is that in thine hand?” Exodus 4:2a

I once had a dream that before her death I met Mother Teresa.

In the dream, I asked Mother Teresa about her work in Calcutta

with the thousands of desperately poor and sick.

Mother Teresa didn’t speak.

She picked up a tattered coat and folded it carefully.

I tried to question her again. “Please tell me of your ministry with the thousands you’ve helped.”

Still Mother Teresa was silent, occupied with the tattered coat.

Finally, she lifted her eyes and looked long and probingly into mine and said softly. “You can warm one person with this one coat.”

She handed me the coat.

“Yes”, I said, rather impatiently now, “but tell me of the thousands….”

I set the coat down.

Gently, Mother Teresa lifted the coat again and pressed it into my hands repeating,

“You can warm one person with this one coat.”

The message at last received, I woke.

We each have a talent to share, a word to speak, a kindness to do.

“What is that in thine hand?”
