But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.  I Samuel 16:7b LKV

Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?

But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.  Luke 12:6-7 KJV

The Bible is clear that God looks on the heart of man, not upon his appearance.

It is the world that is looking and judging by a person’s beauty or strength rather than by his kindness and goodness. Yet, it is this very kindness and goodness in a man’s heart that is of infinite significance.

Jesus reminds us that God watches over the little sparrows that are valued cheaply by the world. Surely, each person is of much more merit than many birds, and our Father in Heaven is certainly loving and watching over us.

We who are created in the very image of God Himself, and who are loved by the Creator of all things, are of worth.

Let us think that over again: Each of us is of worth.

My Brother’s Job

It was dusk

when we drove

past

the homeless man,

shuffling

the opposite direction

up the street.

The forecast predicted

a cold, windy night

ahead.

Our conversation

drifted into speculation

of where the man might be going,

or if he had a place to stay the night.

We wondered if he would have enough to eat.

Would he be warm enough?

Would he eventually find work?

Then my friend mused,

“Maybe he is praying

for us all,

as he walks along,

and his work

is then,

more important

than ours.”

My soul jarred with the impact of his words,

thankfully never to recover.

Soul-jarring leaves soul-sight

clear-eyed.

I grasped the understanding that this homeless man

was deeply loved by Our Father,

and I realized, at long last, that

I was seeing my Brother.
