How Much is A Day Worth?
We spend our days as though they are valueless. We pick and choose our activities to fill our leisure hours as though they would last forever.
Our work days are looked upon far too often as though they were worth only the money that they brought us from the giving away of our hours.
Sometimes, amid the busyness of daily work, do you ever wonder how you are REALLY spending your life?
Like the psalmist, perhaps you have asked God to help you understand this gift of life that He has given you.
For what purpose are you here upon earth?
What is the true measure of your days?
Psalm 39, verse 4 tells us:
4 “Lord, make me to know my end,
And what is the measure of my days,
That I may know how frail I am.
Do we realize how very brief our lives are?
Are we aware that even the strongest man among us, is in actuality frail and his life can be easily lost to the elements and tragedy around the corner?
The psalmist continues:
5 Indeed, You have made my days as handbreadths,
And my age is as nothing before You;
Certainly every man at his best state is but vapor. Selah
We realize, before too long, or the loss of too many friends to death, that our own lives are short spans at best. Our age before the eternity of God is as nothing in comparison. We are but a vapor, a puff of wind that passes and is gone from the spot it passed over.
What are we doing with the time God has given us?
We realize that we are but a shadow, yet we busy ourselves foolishly convincing others and even ourselves that our busyness is proof of our value.
Most of us will heap up riches, or attempt to, yet knowing in our hearts that we will not carry them away with us when we die. They are accumulated here, and we know not to whom they will go when we die. Our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren might precede us in death. Other nations might rise and rule over us, as history has shown over and over, and all we saved is gone to another.
6 Surely every man walks about like a shadow;
Surely they busy themselves in vain;
He heaps up riches,
And does not know who will gather them.
In summary, we are as nothing, busy over nothing of importance if left to our own devices. We gather for strangers.
It is a sad commentary on life, isn’t it? Except for the last lines here.
7 “And now, Lord, what do I wait for?
My hope is in You. Psalms 39:4-7 NKJV
What are we waiting for while on our earthly pilgrimage?
If we put our trust in anything or anyone besides God, we do so in vain.
Our only HOPE, our true and lasting HOPE, our HOPE for eternity is only and always in GOD.
Realize that.
Cling to that.
Live YOUR LIFE for HIM.
Only In GOD, is there TRUE and LASTING MEANING, HOPE, and JOY.
Measure YOUR days accordingly.
